British Standards, IGEM documents

British Standards, IGEM documents, and other ‘appropriate’ standards

These provide detailed practical guidance on how to comply with the functional requirements of Regulations. This guidance is not law but provides information that, if followed correctly, will normally ensure that any legal obligations have been met. Where someone chooses to depart from this, then they will need to ensure that the chosen method is equal to or of a better standard of safety than that detailed in the relevant published guidance. The guidance provided in the appropriate documents can be used to assess compliance.

Reference is often made to industry standards as being appropriate standards. This is a reference to any of the following that are current at the time of the work carried out:

  1. A British Standard
  2. A relevant standard or code of practice of a national standards body of any member state of the European Union
  3. A relevant technical specification acknowledged for use as a standard by a public authority of any member state of the EU
  4. Traditional procedures of manufacture of a member state of the EU where these are the subject of a written technical description sufficiently detailed to permit assessment of the goods or materials for the use specified.
